Williston was built in 1869 by Orange County businessman and public official Joseph Hiden. Following the Hiden family ownership the property passed through several hands until 1910 when William and Nelly Willis acquired the land and gave the name the Property now enjoys. In 1994 the current owners acquired Williston and began an extensive renovation that resulted in Nomination to the Virginia and National Registers of Historic Places. Clearly architecture is the defining criteria as the house Italianate with large, two story portico having paired columns on either side of the entry stairs. The house is two story, double-pile brick employing five course American bond with the exception of a Flemish variant on its principal elevations. Except for a late 19th century lengthening of the stair hall, the interior survives with few alterations and preserves nearly all of its original trim. In the renovation, rare stenciled and painted murals were discovered in peeling away Dining Room wallpaper and have been partially restored. The floral motif is in colors of dark green, pale red, and yellow against a blue background. Williston enjoys exceptional historic character but is also ready for 21st century living with an elevator that connects the tall, English basement with the second floor. The grounds feature several secondary buildings including a rare “street” of preserved domestic buildings including a granary, servants quarters, a chicken house, and a smoke house. The park-like grounds enjoy mature landscaping including much of a private boxwood nursery from the recent past. A swimming pool completes the improvements. The Property is 28+ acres of pasture and has been used in the recent past for horses and cattle. The Historic Town of Orange is two miles north with shopping, dining and professional services including medical. Charlottesville and the University of Virginia are 30 miles SW. Willison resides in the Madison Barbour Rural Historic District and is located near James Madison’s Montpelier.
